How to show epic progress on a Jira Cloud dashboard

Last checked 19 October 2026

Jira Cloud has a few built-in ways to see how far along an epic is. Which one fits depends on whether you want one epic or many, and whether you count issues or story points. I make Epic Progress, one of the options below, so the built-in ones come first.

1. The timeline, for one project

Open the project's Timeline, open View settings and turn on Progress. Each epic gets a bar showing done, in progress and to do, counted by issues. This is the quickest option if your team already uses the timeline. It is not on a dashboard and covers one project at a time.

2. The Epic report, for story points on a Scrum board

On a company-managed Scrum board, open Reports and choose Epic report. It shows completed and remaining story points for one epic, and the Epic burndown report predicts the sprint it will finish in from your average velocity. These reports are not available for Kanban boards or team-managed projects, and they show one epic at a time.

3. Built-in gadgets, for one epic on a dashboard

Save a filter for one epic's child issues, for example parent = WEB-1. Then add a Pie Chart or Issue Statistics gadget to your dashboard, using that filter and grouped by Status. Add a Filter Results gadget with the same filter to list the open issues. This works on any board type, but each epic needs its own filter and gadgets, and the counts are issues rather than story points.

4. Many epics in one dashboard gadget

If you want every epic in a project, or epics across projects chosen by JQL, in one place on a dashboard, you need an app. Epic Progress is one: it draws a bar per epic by issues, story points or time, lists each epic's open issues, and estimates a finish date from how fast the team has been finishing work. Its comparison page sets it against ESU Lite and the built-in options above, including what it does not do. It is free for teams of up to 10 users.
